Geological history has shown that earth has never faced such a rapid change of earth system indicators before. The Holocene itself was an epoch in which humanity was able to thrive, however we are now shifting into the Anthropocene, an epoch of great insecurity with regard to natural feedback cycles. The concepts of sustainability which were created in the 20th century have many pitfalls in the 21st century in regard to responsibility. It is time to reshape the definition of sustainability in order to get in a safe operating space for humanity. Taking into consideration the concept of planetary boundaries as well as the concept of the Doughnut Economy, this lecture will discuss how sustainability can be defined in the 21st century and look into the subject of responsibility.
