This lecture seeks to put into historical perspective the notions of responsibility and consumption by addressing various instances of civil society and political mobilizations since the 18th century in the Anglophone world and the rationale underlying them. Offering an insight into movements and measures that, in different contexts, boycotted products of colonial economies or promoted fairer working conditions, better quality goods and environmentally-friendly production, the lecture will aim to make sense of the particular interests, ethical concerns, business models and broader conceptions of the polity driving the organization of consumers and state policies. It will offer a basis for investigating the intellectual history of responsible consumption. St?phane Guy is professor of Anglophone history at the University of Lorraine (France). He specializes in the history of ideas and has studied the links between ideologies, cultural production and political history. His work involves bringing into contact various disciplines such as history, economic and political thought, philosophy.
