In this talk, we will observe that batteries are ubiquitous, and their applications are growing constantly. However, sustainability concerns are also becoming more pressing because of the sheer scale alone.   The lecture will focus on the role of batteries in the energy system, the sustainability concerns in question, and how to tackle them according to the most recent insights in this quickly evolving field.

An Tiny Maria Hardy (Hasselt University, Hasselt, Belgium) is a full professor of Chemistry at UHasselt and leads the DESINe research group, specialising in the design and synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials for energy applications. With expertise in solution-based synthesis, her research focuses on understanding and controlling the relationships between material properties and their electrochemical performance. An has published over 160 papers, holds 4 patents, and has presented her work at numerous international conferences. In addition to her research, she is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring, guiding 19 PhD students and 3 postdocs. An is also actively involved in several high-impact international research collaborations and projects aimed at advancing sustainable energy technologies.
